About this Fanlisting
Dragonfly, daughter of the drunken Lord of Old Iria on Way was convinced by the sorcerrer Ivory to go to Roke to learn more about herself. She goes as a lad but when she asks admittance at the Great Door of the School, the Doorkeeper calls her daughter and allows her in even though women are not allowed to enter the school except on very rare occasions. Dragonfly, whose name is also Irian causes a great stir amongst the Nine, the master mages of Earthsea and divides them in their opinions as to what to do with her. Thorion, the Master Summoner who summoned himself back from the Dry Land where Ged and Arren saw him says that Irian must be cast out and has a large following. After a meeting of the Nine, Azver the Master Patterner takes her to live near the Grove in Otter's House because he says "In the Grove is no harm".
During this time Azver brings Irian food every day and they go walking in the Grove. Irian stays in one part while Azver goes deeper in. They talk together about her presence and why she shrank back from Thorion, whose presence makes Irian see a grave. Azver does not seem suprised by her revelation. Indeed, he shares that he will stay in the Grove and "not be summoned" by the Summoner. During this time they discuss why Irian believes she has come to Roke and the Grove, for no one comes to Roke by chance. Azver tells her that he has heard the leaves of the Trees saying her name.
One night Irian decides to bathe in the stream that runs near Otter's House. Normally she dislikes water but that night it sounds good. She finds the water warm and soothing. Then she looks up and sees the Summoner standing on the bank and, both frightened and rageful she curses him and scrambles out of the water. She is as cold as she has ever been and colder still. Azver is there and assures her that it was only a seeming of Thorion and she retorts that it was a seeming with eyes. She is freezing, so the Patterner gathers her against him until she warms back up.
Later, those who favor Irian's personal mission gather near the Grove. Thorion and his followers appear and Irian speaks in the Other Voice and challanges him to meet her on Roke Knoll. Swearing to destroy her, Thorion does just that. They meet where all things take their true form and he places a binding upon her using her name "Irian" but Irian cries out that she is not only Irian, breaks the binding, and becomes a dragon. The dragon destroys the Summoner; in his place are the dry bones of a person long dead. Irian announces that she is going to the West to learn her truename from her people but promises to come back, should Azver call her.
Most of their story is in Tales from Earthsea but in The Other Wind we learn what Azver, at least, doesn't seem to be admitting- the other characters can see how he loves Irian (Orm Irian). For all purposes, Irian seems more than a little fond of Azver, even promising to see him again, though they Dragons were leaving the realms of men.
